An A1 reader can understand very short, simple French texts about familiar things: people, food, home, times, prices and daily routine. Sentences are short, mostly present tense, and built from the few hundred most common French words.
How do I start reading French as a complete beginner?
Start with one short A1 passage rather than a book. Read the French line first, reveal the English translation only when a line resists you, then review the vocabulary list at the end and read the passage again in French.
How long does A1 French reading take to master?
Most self-study learners stay at A1 for a few months of regular reading. You are ready to move to A2 when you can read two or three A1 passages in a row without needing the English line.
